Planet – Lightstorm’s Efforts to Build a Greener Digital Future

Digital infrastructure is the foundation of today’s economy — but its environmental impact cannot be ignored. At Lightstorm, sustainability is not an afterthought added to our operations; it is embedded into the design of our network and the choices we make every day.

Sustainable by Design

Our network is built using the latest-generation optical transport equipment, engineered to deliver high-capacity data transfers with far greater energy efficiency. By designing networks along the shortest paths, we achieve two goals simultaneously: reducing latency for customers and reducing emissions per bit transferred. Efficiency for business becomes efficiency for the planet.

Measuring What Matters

We believe that what gets measured gets improved. Every year, we commission third-party greenhouse gas (GHG) emission calculations. These assessments hold us accountable and provide insights into where reductions can be achieved. Transparency in reporting is central to our credibility, which is why our annual GHG inventories are published and accessible.

Smarter, Greener Infrastructure

From lighting to batteries, we make deliberate choices that compound into significant energy savings. LED lighting, energy-efficient batteries, and smart-rack designs are standard. Automation — both robotic and software-driven — reduces wastage in data centre operations, making infrastructure both more efficient and less resource-intensive.

Our offices, located in LEED Platinum Certified buildings, represent the same ethos in our corporate spaces. Employees are encouraged to adopt sustainable habits, with reusable mugs, bottles, and plates replacing single-use alternatives.

Planting for the Future

Beyond minimizing harm, we also work to restore and nurture the environment. Every new Lightstorm Point-of-Presence (Pop) is paired with tree planting efforts. In Kolkata, for example, our team partnered with the Praise Foundation to plant trees in four community schools — improving green cover while building awareness among children about sustainability.

These initiatives are more than symbolic. They reflect our recognition that digital progress and ecological stewardship must advance hand in hand.

Net Zero by 2050

Our ambition is clear: achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. We are also committed to having 50% of our suppliers evaluated for emissions by 2030, ensuring sustainability extends across our value chain. To guide our roadmap, we are seeking Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approval for our emission reduction commitments.

Building the digital future responsibly means holding ourselves accountable to the planet as much as to our customers. Sustainability is not a cost; it is the only viable path forward.
